Between Amex offers and my normal spend this card is a no brainer. Pretty easy to use $20 a month between Uber and grub hub. Should be able to get 50k points annually no problem assuming I’m not chasing a SUB on something else.

So much respect for you and this video. I think I hold something like 10 Amex cards right now, and I have really soured on Amex from some serious chat rep snafus that caused Amex to issue me a $100 statement credit it was so bad. But having been “a member since 1999” (25 years now) gets you exactly nothing. The notion that they value my business is almost a gaslight at this point. It’s been like a bad co-dependent relationship with Amex… can’t live with em… tired of the coupon booking …. Can’t live without ‘em… 4X on all my Apple purchases (including app store purchases & subscriptions AND extended warranty… and those FNC’s on the Hilton cards… I’m a Hyatt dude myself also. Anyway, thanks for helping me grow my 🍒 back to take charge of this unhealthy codependent relationship with Amex. I’ve got some card cancelling to do myself. Done with the hoops … and remember everybody - those “credits” aren’t free money … you’re just jumping through hoops to get your own prepaid money back - never forget that. Also, as an aside - dig the shirt. 🇺🇸 👍🏼

I could never cancel the gold after a new rework is around the corner, imagine it being much better that you crawl back to it at the new AF? I put a lot of spending on it and I’m excited for the upgrade and YES, at a $250.

Makes sense to cancel. The problem Amex now has is the increased competition from banks issuing cards with better rewards, SUB structures and travel partners. Amex keeps underestimating that strong competition by increasing annual fees and further complicating their already annoying coupons.

Cancelling the Amex Gold card was an excellent decision! The Gold card definitely works well for some people, but for others it does not fit well into their credit card setup. It would not benefit me either at this time, because I don't really use Uber or Uber eats and I get most of my groceries at Walmart. Occasionally, I will get groceries at Aldi, Save-a-Lot or one of the local grocery stores but usually I spend less than $100 a month at those stores. I also find the monthly credits on some of the Amex cards to be slightly annoying. I know why Amex does that, but I think that many Amex card holders would still use their Amex cards regularly even with yearly credits. Maybe in the future, the Gold card will be a great card for you. I think it works best for people who can use the credits regularly, those who like a simple card setup, and those who are not consistently applying for new cards to chase welcome offers.

I, on the other hand, just got accepted for the card and am waiting for it in the mail because it's one of the cards that will help me reach my retirement goals (that include both domestic and international travel, and I live right next to a Delta hub). Gas on IHG, groceries on AMEX gold.

What about the Venture X and Savor One Duo. I like Chase for the Hyatt reward redemptions, but hate the categories overlap. If chase would offer bonus categories like the venture/savor I would be all in with Chase. I have the Citi strata but don’t like that I cannot pay myself back for travel due to liking some Air BNB in some locations

Clear plus TSA is definitely worth it, depending upon which airport you travel the most. At MCO it’s a lifesaver.

Here in Argentina, Chile, Uruguay this month, almost all restaurants accept AMEX...4% restaurants worldwide. Most UA-camrs thrive off referrals. I spend and get SUBS, no referrals.

Yeah. Gonna be dropping my BCP for the BCE soon bc i can get grocery & Gas returns in other cards (Savor/Sams) not to mention that BCE online 3% is strong af Then I will likely be getting the Green and Gold just for the SUBs (&Flex) before getting a Plat due to the family rule. Let them all run for at least a year and likely cancel.

This is a great video. It's all about the individual and if the card fits their setup. Platinum is the biggest culprit of this as many shouldn't really have it. I use it for the hotels and flights and get it reimbursed through my employer so I don't actually have to spend money to get the points, and i use the benefits with gold on my personal spending. If you cant get the card to work for you, you're looking at the wrong card.

Good choice. I don't think the Gold card would fit me well. Also, Clear is definitely not worth it. The TSA Precheck line is shorter than Clear for me 9/10 times

That retention offer HAHA I hope no one ever takes it and Amex will stop offering it. Anyway great stuff, I think a lot of credit card enthusiasts who chase sign up bonuses and keep track of 5x quarterly categories may be surprised at how little spend goes on the Amex Gold.

If you have Amex personal checking you get .8x and you get 1 cpp if you have Amex business checking, and Amex gave me SUBs on both accounts. I also just received ANOTHER 150k SUB on Business Gold, to my surprise. I do think a minor tweak like adding 4x gas to Gold would really add value.

I'm glad you canceled. You are practicing what you preach and not just saying it. That retention offer was trash. I would quite literally laugh them off the chat or phone or whatever. So im torn on the credits. So i pretty much use the dining and Uber credits to get myself breakfast/lunch at work. Would i normally get that meal? No, but i sometimes go whole days without eating, ." I get so wrapped up in work or stuck in my head that i forget to eat." But i hate losing money, so it forces me to actually eat something. Should i count it as an actual credit to reduce my effective annual fee or not?

My AF hits in August, so I'm waiting till then to see what the refresh looks like. More flexible credits to offset the AF would be nice, but as of now I'm leaning towards canceling. The best value for this card is in international travel which is just not me. I do spend a lot in dining and grocery every month, but I have a few no annual fee cards that cover those just fine. (Discover It is 5% one quarter on each, FordPass Visa is 3x on dining but becomes 6.3% if you hit the annual $200 bonus for $6,000 spend, and my Verizon Visa is 4% for dining, grocery and gas, Kroger Rewards MasterCard is 5% for Groceries when I use Kroger Pay) Pre paying for Uber and GrubHub is more of a hassle for me than it's worth.

Max rewards is trash. Only links Amex cards...not Chase....🤬. And no I'm not going out of my way to contact Chase to link my cards and/or change my password, etc. It's insane that 1/2 of their FAQ's regarding this issue.

People don’t realize if you have just 1 Citi Custom Cash card, and the Strata Premier and say you spend $1,000 month on groceries OR dining, you effectively earn an average of 4% total on one of those categories. (5% on $500 on CCC, 3% on $500 on the Strata) If you have 2 CCC, you can earn 4% on two top spend categories!

You're my favorite credit card UA-camr. Seriously I been vibing to your takes lately. I swear I can't believe I found someone who isn't on the amex gold hype train. I see so many influencers try to push that card onto me like it's the best of the best but it sucks for my lifestyle. I don't use Ubers, I don't eat from those overpriced apps like GrubHub or Uber eats, and while I do like cheesecake factory, I'll be spending MORE money trying to utilize that $10 monthly credit for it (CF is expensive) than not having the card at all which defeats the purpose of using it to save money. I'll gladly take Savior1's 3X grocery and Dining for my needs

I always liked the idea of the amex gold card for the earn rates but as a single guy I don't spend enough on dining\groceries to justify the annual fee. I never use ubers\uber eats or grub hub. Instead I use chase for dining and the citi custom cash for groceries

Canceling mine as well. I just don't use the credits. And I use a card that I get 6x for groceries. So makes no sense for me .
